Wiffle Ball: A Fun and Adapted Version of Baseball

Wiffle Ball

Wiffle Ball is a delightful and simplified version of baseball, designed to be played both indoors and outdoors, even in confined spaces. It traces its origins back to 1953 when David Mullany created a unique ball for his 12-year-old son. The ball’s name, “Wiffle Ball,” originated from his son and his friends referring to a strike as a ‘whiff.’ Since then, Wiffle Ball has gained immense popularity and has become a beloved game played in backyards, city streets, beaches, and recreational sports pitches worldwide.

The Object of the Game

In Wiffle Ball, the primary objective is to score more runs than the opposing team, making it a captivating and exciting experience. The overarching goal of Wiffle Ball itself is to provide a miniature version of baseball that requires minimal equipment and can be enjoyed in various locations safely.

Players & Equipment

Wiffle Ball requires minimal equipment, making it accessible for anyone interested in playing. All you need is a Wiffle Bat (although a broom handle or similar can be used as a substitute) and a couple of Wiffle Balls. The game can be played with as few as two players, with one as the hitter and the other as the pitcher. On the other hand, with a full team of ten players, different players can be assigned roles or zones such as the home run zone, triple zone, double zone, pitcher, and catcher. Each player must remain in their designated zone during play.

Scoring in Wiffle Ball involves hitting the ball into marked zones without any interception from the opposing fielders. The scoring zones determine the base advancement for the batter. Hitting the ball into the single zone allows the player to advance one base, into the double zone enables them to advance two bases, and into the triple zone allows for three bases. A hit beyond the triple zone is a home run. Each player who successfully rounds the bases scores a run for their team.

Winning the Game

Once both teams have completed their agreed number of innings, typically six, the team with the highest number of runs is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, some Wiffle Ball leagues opt to share the points equally between the teams. However, others may choose to play an additional inning to determine the winner based on the highest score.

Rules of Wiffle Ball

  • Wiffle Ball teams can consist of 1 to 10 players.
  • The batting and fielding sides can be determined through a coin toss or any agreed-upon method like Rock, Paper, Scissors.
  • Each batter faces three pitches from the pitcher and aims to hit the ball into one of the scoring zones.
  • Failing to hit the ball within three pitches results in the batter being called out.
  • Unlike baseball, there is no stealing bases in Wiffle Ball. Movement between bases is only allowed when a scoring shot occurs.
  • Being caught out or swinging and missing three times are the two ways to be called out in Wiffle Ball.
  • An inning concludes when all the batters have had their turn or when three players are called out. It then becomes the opposition’s turn to bat.
  • The number of innings agreed upon before the game usually ranges from 6, although other numbers can be determined between the teams. Alternatively, games can be played within a set time limit, often around 55 minutes.
  • At the end of the game, the team with the most runs is declared the winner. While some leagues allow drawn games with shared points, most leagues and informal games opt for an additional inning for each team to determine the final winner.
