Non-Exercise Fitness Test

The Non-Exercise Fitness Test is a convenient and secure way to determine your VO2max and assess your fitness level without engaging in any physical activity. Developed by Jackson et al. in 1990, this test utilizes a regression equation to calculate your cardiovascular fitness.

The Non-Exercise Fitness Test requires specific values to input into the regression equations, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI) or body fat percentage, and physical activity rating (PAR). Height and body weight measurements are required for BMI calculations, while body fat percentage can be either measured or calculated. Once you have gathered the appropriate information, enter the values into the equations below to obtain your VO2max score.

Calculations (based on Jackson et al., 1990):

  • VO2max = 56.363 + 1.921(PAR) – 0.381(A) – 0.754(BMI) + 10.987(G) (if using BMI)
  • VO2max = 50.513 + 1.589(PAR) – 0.289(A) – 0.522(% fat) + 5.863(G) (if using body fat percentage)


The result of the Non-Exercise Fitness Test is a VO2max score, which can be evaluated using VO2max tables.

Target Population

This test is suitable for assessing large groups, individuals with low fitness levels, the elderly, and those who are unable to engage in exercise due to musculoskeletal disorders.


The Non-Exercise Fitness Test offers several advantages. It requires minimal equipment and provides a quick and safe measure of fitness without the need for exercise.


It is important to note that the results of this test are partially based on your self-assessed level of physical activity. Consequently, it may not be as accurate as an exercise-based fitness test.
