Where
the fuck is it? Gottcha! Found it at last amongst some hidden files in
my computer. At the end of my review for the Westwind CD release "The
Bunker" I wrote "Anyone with the vaguest of interest in this
type of music would be well advised to go out right now and buy this CD.
I can’t be more specific or say fairer than that." If they
had used that quote on a poster campaign to help flog it they could, possibly,
be retired and laying on a sun drenched beach up to their necks in drugs
and wild sex. But they didn’t. More fool them.
"Tourmente II" is part of a triple release, the others being
released on vinyl, and is a kind of concept recording dedicated to the
destruction of the city of Brest during WW2. As one would expect with
such solemn fare there’s no laugh a minute shit going down and you
aren’t going to file it under ‘H’ for Happy in your
collection. Unless of course you’re a twisted motherfucker. Deviating
slightly from their usual quirkiness and weird charm here the music is
more percussion and organ based with a fine dynamic in rhythm and mood
setting. Actually the music is very simplified and restrained which only
adds emphasis to the bleak ambience of the subject manner that they are
trying to convey. Part life affirming and uplifting and part despondent
and depressing the music twists and turns through so many feelings leaving
you breathless with admiration. If you could imagine a more upbeat Protagonist
it will give you some, but not all, sense as to what "Tourmente II"
sounds like.
Like a moth caught in a naked flame the music continually drags at you,
exhilarating but exhausting you in the process at the same time, until
the cycle is completed. It is an emotional and sensational ride that you
would be well advised to hitch onto. And…they can quote me on that.
