Ah,
another obscure & unknown project that has been slung my way thanks
to this little reviewer’s game I have chosen to participate in.
And with unknown projects there is nothing better then the feeling of
being sent a gem of a release that you previously knew nothing of. So
will this be one of those particular releases? We shall see!
To provide background Flutwacht are a German based project, where they
approach a sound that could be coined as industrial noise or even black
ambient, due to the densely muffled sound production. Whilst such music
can often work well with a lo-fi production adding to the overall aura,
in the case of this I find it far too bass heavy which in turn has created
a compressed & flat sounding recording. Now I’m not actually
sure if the finished sound was specifically intended or may be symptomatic
of poor equipment or recording techniques used?
Anyway, of the 7 untitled tracks, they each run one into the next swinging
from oppressively grating ambience through to heaver tonal noise. However
with limited reliance on clear compositional structure, I find that the
more it rolls on the less engaging the album is. There are some OK ideas
at play here, however when I own literally dozens of other albums like
this – but far better – you get this picture that this is
going to sink to the bottom of my records collection rather quickly.
